Disconnect to Reconnect: Returning to a Focus on Learning and Engagement
Beginning this school year, Valdez City Schools will implement Board Policy 5138: 'Student Possession and Use of Portable Electronic Devices' to create a more focused learning environment for our students.

Board Policy 5138 requires all students to store personal devices (such as cell phones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds) powered down in their lockers throughout the school day.

6 students standing with state senator in front of flags and the state seal

Last week, five delegates from Valdez High School traveled to Juneau for the spring Alaska Association of Student Government conference. While at the conference, students met with students from around Alaska to discuss, debate, and advocate for positions on a wide range of issues from mental health, school funding, immigration policy, and to local curriculum choices. Erik Vincent led the way as the Region 3 Representative, while Kirstyn Passin jumped into debate topics at her first conference. Harper Ownbey, Connor Hamilton, Jewely Weber cheered them on and provided support.

These students also gained experience meeting with legislators when we met with Senator Rauscher at the State Capitol. They also took a guided tour of the Capitol, visited the Alaska State Museum, and saw the sights of downtown Juneau. Apart from these experiences, students also had time to meet with students and building connections and friendships that will help carry our state into the future.
